triduum

Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Jerusalem

We are one week away from Good Friday. Where has Lent gone? In less than a week we will enter into the Sacred Triduum and immerse ourselves through prayer and ritual into the most sacred event of our faith:  the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord. It is sad to think at time that many of our younger people have never been a part of the washing of the feet, spent time with the Lord on Holy Thursday, felt the silence of Good Friday and kissed the Cross at the Veneration, waited in the expectation of Holy Saturday and were bathed in the new light of the Resurrection at the beginning of the Easter Vigil.

The reasons people give are probably valid. The ceremonies are long and my kids get bored. Probably. We have plans to go somewhere on school break. It is ironic to me that the schools seem to always schedule the school break around Easter….and Easter is a movable feast. I am not being judgmental, only reflecting what people have said over the years. I do not have a response, and I would never be in favor of making these Sacred Days, days of obligation.

For me, these are days to spend in the mystery of the Divine Love who gave everything for us: His broken Body and poured out Blood, His willingness to embrace the Cross and Grave so we have eternal life, and the joy of the Resurrection and the hope it brings.

If you are reading this and have never experienced the Triduum, I invite you to go this year to the one in your parish and experience in sign, sound, and ritual the core mystery of the faith.
