“I don’t practice any religion because there are too many rules.”

This comment is more common that we realize. Are there “rules” to follow? Yes. Some are made to make sure the group functions well and can be changed to address new situations and issues. In our tradition, there are other “rules” not created by humanity but given to us by God. In the readings today, we hear the rules of faith: love, respect, take care of each other, be honest with each other, stand in awe of God, and the list continues. Jesus calls us to see Him in each person we meet, especially those who struggle.
Lent can be a time to refocus on the “rules of God” and find the peace they give.
The life that the rules of God offer us a life filled with blessings. It is not always easy, and we will fail at times, but God assures us of mercy, forgiveness, and grace. God’s rules are based in love and respect, not a list of dos and don’ts. God’s rule frees us to be His People.
