make me a channel of your peace

Our deacons preached yesterday so I did not have a written homily to post. Even though the past posts have been on the daily readings of Lent, I want to share some thoughts that came about as a result of our Evening Prayer for peace in the world. One of the main things I walked away with was the importance of the Christian community sitting in the same room in the context of prayer and sharing our thoughts and differences. Like the apostles who gathered with Jesus in the evening to have a conversation, this was what last night was about. We gathered as disciples to listen to God, to listen to each other’s thoughts and to listen to our own hearts. We all want the peace that only God can give and this was the bond between us all. We all realized that we cannot change on a global, national, or state level at the moment, but we need to change the local level and challenge the rest.

We did not all agree but we do not have to and this was the consensus of the group. What we also realized is that we can share and not be angry with each other. There were some great insights shared and very simple practices that we all can do. The simplest was to do a random act of kindness every day. No one seemed to have an agenda only to come together and dream and pray.

What I suggested is that we make this a part of our spiritual life together. We gather and offer Evening Prayer and spend some time talking about how to be peacemakers and leave after an hour. Obviously, nothing will happen again until after Easter but spread the word. My dream is to have our youth mixed in and we have one group of disciples making a difference.
